The International Institute for Research and Education celebrated its 25 years anniversary in 2007, as it underwent the most radical relaunch of its history.
Along with the physical move of the IIRE a far-reaching relaunch was intended, which now is in its early stages.
The comprehensive aim of the IIRE after the relaunch is summarized in the vision of the IIRE: “The IIRE's vision is to become a dynamic and visible centre of research and education, a meeting place for activists and scholars, united in a common struggle for a world freed from all forms of exploitation and oppression.
RETURNS OF MARXISM
for understanding and
attempting to change the world
In recent years we have seen a renewed interest in Marxism worldwide. New generation is discovering the fertility of the many traditions of Marxism for understanding and attempting to change the world. This seminar series aims to bring together scholars, writers and activists from different fields in order to discuss the relevance of Marxist ideas for contemporary debates. One seminar will be held regularly each month, with occasional lectures by visitors at other times. Returns of Marxism is presented by the International Institute of Research and Education. US imperialism and Marxist perspectives on geopolitics
Excellent in combining new programmes. The school is
an impressive example of the connection of a building with a neighbourhood. The
effect on the day to day life in the quarter is enormous.
These are the
words of the jury, who have awarded the IIRE, and its partners on Timorplein, a
prize for the best redevelopment and renovation in Amsterdam.
Every year the Amsterdam municipality
awards the best initiative in the field of redevelopment and renovation in the
existing building stock of old buildings. The prize is also explicitly meant
for a building that contributes importantly to the quality of life in the
neighbourhood

Part I. A general introduction.
As well known, Marx did not
explicitly write a work on dialectics. Nevertheless, he thought it would be
possible to make intelligible to people with ordinary intelligence in a few pages
what is rational in the method “which Hegel discovered and at the same
time mystified”. In spite of Marx’s warning that Hegel mystified dialectics, traditionally,
commentators have tried to force Marx into conformity with Hegel. I will depart
from this tradition and will submit a notion of dialectics as a method of
social research, a method focused exclusively on social reality. This method is
extracted from Marx’s own work rather than from Hegel’s work. I argue that it is
internally consistent with Marx’s
theory and therefore capable of further
developing that theory in order to account for capitalism’s new features.
Gramsci
conference on 8 December in Amsterdam turned out to be a big success, both in terms of
participation and discussions.
With 120 registrations,
much more than expected, the organisers were forced to turn down people who
wanted to participate.
On Saturday the
IIRE hosted, in corporation with the Italian Cultural Institute in Amsterdam, a one-day
seminar on the legacy and relevance of Gramsci’s thought today.
The composition
of the audience was very various: students, academics, workers and a good
gender balance. There were also many young people, mainly students, who came in
order to understand the revolutionary thought of Antonio Gramsci. The
participants came form different backgrounds, and people even took the trip from
Turkey, Germany and Belgium to attend the conference.
